Adaptive Medicine in Action
Core Naturopathics is Australia’s leading biohacking clinic.
Public interest in biohacking and the benefits of it is increasing, and although we have been utilising biohacking philosophy in our clinic for over 10 years, it’s not something we have particularly spoken about.
The next evolution of biohacking at Core is what we call Adaptive medicine.
Adaptive medicine can be seen as the Pendulum swing. One where we have a response and then we recover. When elasticity is lost, we have hard-wired responses of stress, therefore losing the ability to adapt.
The Nervous system provides a excellent example of this. At any given moment stress can occur and we shift gears into fight/flight/freeze/fawn, an awesome human advantage when a life-threatening situation presents. As the threat passes, our nervous system should begin to relax as we shift back down a gear into rest & digest.
BUT. What happens if the gear box begins to malfunction? If we cannot relax, and have extended periods of stress, becoming hyper vigilant and reactive to things that aren’t actually life-threatening? We call this Xena warrior princess mode – tense, defensive and always on the lookout for the next threat.
With the nervous system, you’ve got two parts – Sympathetic and Parasympathetic. Reaction and recovery.
When we spend extended periods of time in the sympathetic response, simple processes such as digesting food, assimilating nutrients, restful sleep, mopping up inflammation & repairing cells are no longer a priority, survival is.
Life will always be in constant motion, fluctuating between periods of calm and chaos. Our response is founded on our individual perception and influences our biology differently. But if we can adapt, we can evolve.
When selecting biohacking equipment to integrate into our clinical practice, we are most interested in how it can support this adaptive capacity of the body.
The IMRS mat for instance, uses brain entrainment combined with a continuous heart rate monitor (HRM) to assess nervous system function and stress index. The stimulus you receive via goggles & headphones is responding to the feedback you provide via this HRM to regulate the autonomic nervous system.
The Reoxy machine is another piece of equipment we have in clinic. It uses Hypoxic training to promote physiological adaptation and increase resilience in the body. The integration of AI technology and biofeedback provided alters the gaseous mixtures released to stimulate and encourage greater adaptation.
Utilising modern technology, and integrating this incredible science into our clinical practice allows us to support your bodies innate healing capacity for increased adaptation.
